Please note that if you're looking for 12 month deals on the latest smartphones like the Apple iPhone 4 16GB, BlackBerry 9800 Torch, BlackBerry 9900 Bold, HTC One X, Nokia Lumia 800, Samsung i9300 Galaxy S3 or Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc the offers with the lowest monthly rental cost may not include the handset for free. This is because the network cannot subsidise the high cost of the latest smartphones on a shorter 12 month tariff contract deal. If you really want the handset for free, just specify this in the search box above and we'll only display the deals with the phone for free. Sometimes the best value (i.e. cheapest contract deal over 12 months) may be a deal where a small fee for the mobile handset is charged. E.g. assume handset, contract length (12), free minutes and free texts are the same.

Deal 1 costs: £30 / month and FREE handset

Deal 2 costs: £20 / month and £60 handset

While Deal 1 may look more attractive because of the fact that the handset is free, over the 12 month contract duration, Deal 2 will work out to be cheaper over 12 months. In fact, offer 1 will cost £30 x 12 = £360 while offer 2 will only cost £20 x 12 + £60 = £300. Hence, even though the phone is not free at the beginning, over the duration of your contract you'll save £60.

The great thing about our website is that you don't need to worry about these calculations, since by default we'll display the 12 month deals which work out to be the cheapest over the duration of the contract first. This is bound to make you some great savings and ... if you like, you can also compare the offers with those longer 18, 24 and 36 month contracts. You'll notice that the average cost of your deal goes down the longer the contract period. However, you'll be tied on to a longer contract and if you like a new phone or smartphone every year then the 12 month offers are best suited to you.

It's down to "The European Telecoms Package" that 12 month mobile contracts have become available again in 2011. Ofcom has to transpose this European Directive into UK law by the end of May 2011 and under it "contract lengths must not exceed 24 months and mobile phone consumers should have the option to subscribe to a 12 month contract." Not great news for Vodafone, Orange, O2 and T-Mobile, since they like to keep you tied into longer term contracts, but great new for us and the phones manufacturers.
